Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (September, 2001)
Author: Andrew G. Traver
Average review score:

From Polis to Empire - The Ancient World
I found this biographical dictionary convenient to use. It provides the reader with a rich cultural overview of the ancient world.
The entries are organized for quick, concise reference.
The well developed chronology was useful.

Fascinating for the non-specialist general reader
From Polis To Empire: The Ancient World c. 800 B.C. - A.D. 500 is a dictionary of biographies featuring notable and influential figures of the ancient world. From Alexander the Great to Zoroaster, and including countless lesser-known rulers, mathematicians, historians, and more, From Polis to Empire, deftly edited by Andrew Traver (Assistant Professor of Ancient and Medieval History, Southeastern Louisiana University), not only presents the lives of history's spokespersons but through them, a snapshot of life in the ancient world. An excellent, scholarly reference highly recommended for academic and community library collections, From Polis To Empire is also fascinating for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in antiquity to simply browse through.

Frommer's Great Outdoor Guide to Northern California
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (June, 1903)
Authors: Andrew Rice and Marc Herman
Average review score:

E?
I'm pretty sure Marc E. Herman isn't the guy who worked on this book. I think Marc E. Herman is a hydrologist or something like that. The co-author of this book is a guy named Marc Herman. But I think his middle name is Robert and he doesn't know all that much about hydrology.

Really good book though.

A nice, well organized book
Having moved to Reno three months ago, and overwhelmed by the vast expanse of national forests, parks, and monuments just over the border, I am finding this book extremely helpful. If there is an outdoor activity and it can be done in north cali, this book will tell you where to do it. Not only that, it is very well written, gives good critical commentary, and provides other interesting bits of knowledge along the way. It is also nice in referencing additional books that may get more specific in regards to a specific activity. This book should be useful for anyone who wants to explore the area but doesn't know quite where to start, whether looking for a serious, extreme adventure or quiet family weekend.

Fundamental Web Design and Development Skills

Great Book to learn about Web Design
FUNDAMENTAL WEB DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT SKILLS
AUTHOR: Rachel Andrew, Chris Ullman and Crystal Waters
PUBLISHER: Glasshaus
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: The very first thing I always look for when a book contains a CD is the contents of that CD. If it has a trial version of the software the book is about, it is one I would think of buying. Fundamental Web Design and Development Skills has such a CD and it contains Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX and Fireworks MX. Anyone buying this book is off to a flying start with these programs available to them

Next I check out the Contents section. Fundamental Web Design has 16 Chapters and the titles of the Chapters make real sense. A reader would know where to look for a specific item. Then I look at the Index which, of course, is another version of the Contents but gives a more in-depth listing. There are 28 pages of information located here. Between the Contents and the Index, no reader should have to wonder where to go to find the information he/she wants.

In reading the book, the chapters give a good explanation of what the chapter is about. It doesn't skimp on explaining what HTML or XHTML is but it also doesn't go overboard to the point of boring a reader or giving extraneous information. The chapters contain visual examples of what is being discussed and each chapter ends in a summary of that chapter.

This is a book I wish I had known about when I was beginning to learn Web Designing. I would have been able to "test-drive" the software and would have bought these programs to begin with rather than going through different software first. The CD also contains all the files needed to work through what the chapters are teaching and as it says on the CD, there is "an extensive list of links to provide you with further reading and material to compliment the wealth of knowledge already contained within this book......."arranged into categories for easy reference.

I would highly recommend Fundamental Web Design and Development Skills to anyone even if you already have some knowledge of web design. Why the writing in this book so understandable may be due to the fact that two of the three authors of this book are women and the only man has interests in art and literature, is a cat lover and has worked with a baby in his lap.

Excellent introductory material
Glasshaus has a new book for anyone looking to get involved in web development, and learn the best ways to go about things from the outset. In this book we see an admirable dedication to sticking to the modern standards of XHTML 1.0, HTML 4.01 and CSS; with little space wasted on discussing the common methods that forward-looking web designers are trying to distance themselves from.

While this book is very much targeted at the beginner just starting to make their way in the field, it would serve equally well as a guide to the modern way of doing things for any developer still mired in the un-compliant techniques and inaccessible practices of the past. Careful attention is paid to explaining fully the relationship between HTML, XHTML and XML, and the future-compatibility ramifications of your choice of markup. The only time deprecated elements (like the tag) are ever mentioned are necessary notes for those coders who are tasked with redesigning existing sites authored in old-style markup.

Covering a wide range of topics, all extremely relevant to anyone in the business of making quality websites, this book should help any reader to feel confident in their awareness of the current state of play. The first few chapters introduce the fundamental concepts of markup languages and hypertext, before diving straight in to page and graphic design. Designing page layouts using tables is advised against, and the superior CSS positioning options are championed. Subjects usually left out of introductory texts - like accessibility and site administration - are here examined and explained without ever being simplistic (or stunting the reader's understanding with overly-technical information). In fact, the book carries a very strong commitment to usability and accessibility, and includes many practical implementation tips. A complete introduction to JavaScript is also included.

While a complete discourse on each subject area are naturally beyond the scope of the book, adequate exposition is given for each topic, which will provide ample foundation for further learning. This book is an excellent starting point that will quickly set interested readers on the right track.

Fundamentals of Operating Systems
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (May, 1985)
Author: Andrew M. Lister
Average review score:

Great book
This is one of the best books on OS issues I have ever seen. Entertaing and problem oriented. If you can buy this one - do not hesitate! it is not outdated, because the most fundamental problems of OS design do not change so fast as version numbers ;-).

Clear and succinct
Ashame this book isn't publish at the moment. It is better on the fundamentals of OS, than Tanenbaum or Stallings. If anyone is aware of a similiar book on the fundamentals of OS (or computer networks), kindly email.

The Gardener's Book of Color: Creating Contrasts, Harmonies, and Multicolor Themes in Your Garden
Published in Hardcover by Reader's Digest Adult (May, 1996)
Author: Andrew Lawson
Average review score:

Stunning
This is one of my all time favorite books, I return to it time and again for ideas, ispiration and information. Andrew Lawson has written the definitive book on using color in the garden, there are wonderful examples of single color gardens, as well as using contrasting and co-ordinating colors with plants. He gives great suggestions for plants to use. The photographs in this book, taken by Lawson himself are superb. Every gardener will get something from this brilliant book.

new ways to look at color
Lawson does a better job of presenting and especially operationalizing color blending than any of ten books I looked at. He also consistently identifies what is in the glorious pictures. I am amazed by how many authors do not do this. It is an outstanding book for a beginner, that's me, to make a garden look like a pro did it, and for an experienced gardener to gain new perspectives and want to plant even more.

Gay London: A Guide
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (September, 1999)
Authors: Will McLoughlin, Peter Jones, Ian Martin, and Andrew Wyllie
Average review score:

Wonderful Compliment to A Comprehensive Guide
If you're a gay man who doesn't know London well, buy this book. Gay London offers a selective and manageable list of what to do and see in London-both what's nominally gay and what some gay men look for (e.g., art museums). I finished the book thinking that Gay London was what the four authors would recommend to their out-of-town friends.

Presented more as a travelogue, the authors identify and describe what they like about London. The writing is clever and the book is well organized. The book is also wallet size, which meant I could carry it around easily and pull it out to read whenever I had a free moment. Most convenient.

Two notes:
1. If you don't know London well, you will need another guide, because Gay London is highly selective--thus leaves out a lot of information.
2. This book is for gay men. Thankfully, the authors make that clear on the outside back cover.

The Gay Way to LONDON!
This guide is very complete and accurate. Anything gay that you could possibly want to know about or do in London is included! Don't go to London without it!

General Andrew Lewis of Roanoke and Greenbrier

General Andrew Lewis
I agree that great men have been neglected in the overtures of history, such as General Lewis. However, he is intered at East Hill Cemetary just above downtown Salem, VA.

Gen. Andrew Lewis of Roanoke and Greenbrier by Johnson
I really enjoyed this book after searching for it for years! The General was one of my ancestors. My Gr. Grandmother was Samantha Lewis Westfall. It was a well researched book. However, the General's burial is in Hampton W. Va. As a small child I used to put flowers on his grave. This is near Buckhannon W.Va. I feel the same way that Johnson does, that so many greats were ignored while too much attention was paid to George Washington. General Lewis was at the very least, equal to Washington during and before the revolutionary way. A great book for history buffs!

Leprechauns and Ireland - A Great Treat
I have read this story to my third graders for the past few years and they absolutely love it. This is a great story for March. Use as an introduction to the folklore of leprechauns. This story keeps my students' attention until the last page.

If you are a publisher, PICK UP THIS BOOK!!!!
The Gift is fantastic! While reading this book, my fourth grade students sometimes roll on the floor in fits of laughter and sometimes sit quietly with eyes glistening. It is beautifully written with an important message about family, love, and roots. Unfortunately, the original art in it is GROTESQUE, probably to blame for its being removed from print. I BEG A PUBLISHER TO GET IT BACK IN PRINT--without illustrations!! I KNOW it will be a big seller!

God's Best Secrets
Published in Paperback by Whitaker House (February, 1999)
Author: Andrew Murray
Average review score:

Rest for the Wearied Soul--That's what this book is
I was first introduced to this little book over twenty years ago. Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, mentioned it in an audio tape, saying, "I usually don't recommend daily devotionals, but one has changed my life: Andrew Murrey's "God's Best Secrets." I have a well-worn hard-bound copy of the twenty-first printing (1976) that I keep coming back to and using as my daily meditation over several others by such luminaries as A.W. Tozer and J. Sidlow Baxter. Great as those are, Murray's book is simply the best--a well of faith-building insights that never runs dry. If you are evangelical in your theology, do yourself a favor and start the new year (the new millennium as I write this) with this book daily in hand.

A feast for the soul
This book is a daily cleanser for the soul. Reading just one devotional a day helps you to seek the Lord all day long. Andrew Murray does a great job on helping people realize that they need to come to God everyday and spend time with Him. It has really helped me do this, and, on top of that has brought me to a closer, more personal, relationship with God. This book covers many secrets on how to live a more profound Chritian walk. It's a great book to read over and over again because there's so much to get out of every devotional.
